Venus Williams is the oldest player in the singles field, aged 38. The former World No.1, who turns 39 in June, is seeking her first Indian Wells title.
When she won last year's event, Naomi Osaka became one of three unseeded players to do so. The others were Serena Williams in 1999 and Kim Clijsters in 2005.
Five winners of WTA titles in 2019 are in action today: Karolina Pliskova (Brisbane), Aryna Sabalenka (Shenzhen), Julia Goerges (Auckland), Naomi Osaka (Australian Open) and Belinda Bencic (Dubai).
Danielle Collins won her first WTA main draw match at Indian Wells last year, beating Taylor Townsend at the start of a run to the fourth round.
